League Policy Priorities for 2006

 

  • Redistricting    With the advent of modern computers and intensifying partisanship, legislative districts are being created where the results of an election are known before any votes are cast or tabulated. The League believes this trend must change to preserve our democracy.   read more
  • Civil Liberties   The League believes that basic civil liberties must be protected as the nation seeks to guard against terrorism and other threats to national security.   read more
  • Election reform   In the wake of the 2000 election, the League has worked for key reforms. More must be done.   read more
  • Campaign Finance   Despite the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act more money continues to be spent on political campaigns. The League supports legislation requiring television and radio broadcast stations to provide free air time to candidates and political parties for political debate before elections.   read more
  • Clean Air   The League is concerned about Bush Administration efforts to weaken the Clean Air Act and the Administration's inaction on global warming.  read more
  • Social Security   The League opposes the privatization of Social Security.  read more
  • DC Voting Rights   The League believes that the citizens of Washington D.C. should be fully represented in Congress.   read more
  • Arctic National Wildlife Refuge   The League is committed to the preservation of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.   read more
