Season Pool Trends:

The return of the WAC.

Beginning with the secession of the Mountain West Conference in 1999, the once proud WAC Conference had deteriorated into among the worst conferences in the country. New Mexico State has usually been decent but the other teams have generally been in the lower 25% of all teams. But this year the conference features four decent teams, with the top two among the true Wild Card leaders:

Utah Val St

Grand Canyon

N Mex State

CS Bakersfld

Texas A&M

To open the season, they trounced favored West Virginia even though their top player was suspended. They followed it up with an impressive win over Oklahoma State. They might be the best team in the SEC.

Arizona State

They feature a diminutive star point guard in Tra Holder and no other big names but they are currently the best in the Pac 12 after two notable second half blitzes against San Diego State and Xaver.

Led by the addition of 5 star 7 footer Brandon McCoy, the remake of this team appears to be far more successful than anyone would have predicted as they thoroughly demolished a better than expected Utah team. It may be a three way race in the Mountain West or UNLV could even run away with it - too early to tell.

Last place in the Bahama tournament? Unbelievable. Was the wrong Arizona team picked to win the Pac 12? Hard to believe they can't fix this start though.

College of Charleston

Everyone figured them to easily be the best in a bad Colonial Conference. They still may be. There is no shame in their 18 point loss at Wichita but their loss to lowly Cal Poly on a neutral court suggests that they are not what they were cracked up to be.

With almost everyone returning from a tournament team, they figured to be a lock to return and be among the best in the Big 10. Instead their ceiling might be finishing ahead of Rutgers and Nebraska.
